Maryland Family In Good Health After Baby Born Along Highway

CROWNSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A Glen Burnie woman and her baby are in good health after the mother gave birth on the side of a highway.

The Capital reports that 35-year-old Heather Mewshaw gave birth to Lucia Mewshaw on Wednesday along Interstate 97 in Crownsville.

Heather Mewshaw was being driven to a birthing center in Annapolis, but the family got stuck in traffic and realized they would not arrive in time. Heather's husband Doug Mewshaw pulled over onto the grass along the shoulder of the highway and called 911. Moments later, Heather gave birth and the father held his daughter.

The 911 dispatcher helped Doug through the process of tying the umbilical cord and taking care of the 7-pound, 5-ounce baby until paramedics arrived and took the mother and daughter to a hospital.
