Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin not with team after DUI charges in Florida

Maryland Terrapins co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin charged with DUI in Florida during bye week

BALTIMORE -  Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin, who was charged with driving under the influence last Saturday, will not be with the team this week as the Terrapins prepare for a road game at Northwestern, head coach Mike Lockley said.

Locksley said he anticipates that Sumlin will be disciplined, but did not go into further detail.

"It's a personnel matter," Locksley said on Tuesday. "If you look at the track record of what we've done in the past, you probably have an idea of what will take place."

Sumlin was pulled over around 12:40 a.m. Saturday on N. US Highway 301 in Tampa, Florida during Maryland's bye week.

He refused to take a breathalyzer and was then arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Sumlin was released on a $500 bond.

"We are aware of the charges," Locksley said. "It is disappointing. As coaches, we have to set the example and model of behavior that we want in our players."

Locksley confirmed during his media conference on Tuesday that Sumlin is away from the team.

"We take it very seriously," Locksley added. "At the same time, I will also say that he is a part of our football family and we are going to support Kevin. To me, that's a personnel issue where we will let our personnel and what we've done in the past kind of dictate how things play out."

The Terps (5-2) play at Northwestern at noon on Saturday trying to avoid a three-game losing streak.

Sumlin was hired by Maryland this past offseason.

Previously, he had been head football coach at Arizona (2018-2020); Texas A&M (2012-2017); and Houston (2008-11).
