Man Who Killed Ex, Fled With Daughter Gets Life In Prison

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The man who led police on a multi-state manhunt and triggered an AMBER Alert will now spend life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Timothy Virts was sentenced Friday morning to life without parole in the murder of Bobbie Jo Cortez last March.

Cortez died in the basement bedroom of her Dundalk home stabbed repeatedly, her mouth bound with duct tape to muffle her screams. By the time one of her children discovered her body, 39-year-old Virts had already kidnapped their 12-year-old daughter, triggering an AMBER alert.

Police caught up with him in South Carolina after a motel owner called in a tip.

According to WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun, the judge criticized Virts' claim that he murdered his children's mother to protect them.
