Man shot in face, two persons of interest apprehended near Baltimore's Lexington Market

BALTIMORE - A 29-year-old man is in stable condition after he was shot in the face Monday afternoon near Baltimore's historic Lexington Market.

Police confirm they have two persons of interest in custody.

"I just found out a friend of mine was shot," Tee Tee, from Baltimore, said.

WJZ spoke with a woman who says she knows the victim.

"I just try to hurry up and get out of here as soon as possible," Tee Tee said.

The shooting happened at the corner of Lexington and Eutaw streets just before 2:30 p.m. while officers were on patrol in the area.

While police investigated for hours, the MTA shut down service of the Lexington Market subway station during the middle of the evening commute.

It was just one year ago that the newly rebuilt market was opened to the public.

However, people WJZ spoke with say that even though the building has been remodeled, the same problems persist.

"It's a bad neighborhood," Tee Tee said. "It's a bad spot to be. Like even standing on the bus stop, you can't stand right there and just -- I mean we're downtown, we're at Lexington Market. Come on now."

In May of last year, five people were shot in the middle of the afternoon outside the market.

The victims survived and police later released video of a suspect, but have yet to make an arrest.

Four months later, two more people were shot near the market. One of them died.

After Monday's shooting, neighbors tell WJZ they're sick of the area being a hot spot for violence.

"Sorry about what happened because something every day is happening down here," Tee Tee said.

Police have not said whether charges will be filed against the persons of interest yet.

The man is expected to survive the shooting.
