Man Sentenced In Scheme To Fraudulently Buy Cars
GREENBELT, Md. (AP) -- A Tennessee man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for trying to buy luxury vehicles using stolen identities.
Thirty-four-year-old Flinton Newton of Bartlett, Tenn., was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Greenbelt.
According to his plea agreement, Newton and others stole identifying information, created false documents, and tried to buy expensive vehicles.
Prosecutors say Newton went to a dealership in Greenbelt in July and applied for more than $80,000 in financing to buy Cadillac Escalade in the victim's name.
Authorities say later that day, Newton went to another dealership in Silver Spring and tried to buy two Mercedes-Benzes for a total of more than $120,000.
Prosecutors say the Silver Spring saw that the victim's identifying information had been used at the first dealership and called police.
