1 Dead, 8 Injured In Frederick Co. Boating Accident

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say one man was killed and eight others were injured when a pontoon boat went over a dam onto a rocky spillway in Lake Linganore near Frederick.

Maryland Natural Resources Police identified the man who died as 62-year-old Stephen Hembree of New Market.

Authorities say Hembree was one of four people who went over the dam with the boat on Saturday evening. The three others were teenage girls. They were rescued by a state police helicopter after they climbed into a rescue basket that was lowered down to them.

Four other victims were able to stay on the dam ledge and were rescued there, and another victim was pulled from the water.

Police say currents in the lake were strong because of Saturday's heavy rainfall.
