Man Accused Of Stabbing Nurse With Metal Spike Incompetent For Trial
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A state psychiatric hospital patient in Cumberland is moving to more secure surroundings after he was ruled incompetent to stand trial for allegedly stabbing a nurse in the head with a metal spike.
An Allegany County prosecutor said Monday that the judge ruled Thursday Craig Zello, 51, is a danger himself or others. So Zello is going to the maximum-security Clifton T. Perkins Hospital in Jessup.
Zello could still be tried for the October attack if he is found competent.
The Hagerstown man was a patient at the Thomas B. Finan Center in Cumberland when he allegedly plunged a 7-inch, galvanized metal spike into the back of a male nurse's head. The victim was treated at a local hospital and released.
