Man Wounded In Police-Involved Shooting In East Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police shoot a man who they say was armed in East Baltimore. Community members say it all happened right in front of children playing.

Meghan McCorkell has more on the investigation.

Witnesses say a man in his 20s was shot by a police officer after that officer attempted to stop him.

Investigators say two plain-clothed officers wearing police vests were patrolling the 900-block of Preston Street. They attempted to stop a man riding a bike, but that person took off down an alley.

Witnesses say that's when the police gave chase.

"One got out, chased him. Other guy ran, drove the car this way. Like five seconds later, you heard three shots," said Alco Marshall, witness.

Detectives say the man pulled out a revolver before an officer fired at him.

"We don't know how many times the suspect was struck. Suspect is at a local hospital being treated. None of the officers were injured," said Dep. Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez, Baltimore City Police.

From Sky Eye Chopper 13, you could see police searching for evidence in that alley.

"It's just too much. Too much," witness Caprice Miller said.

Miller says she was sitting on her front steps with her two-year-old son riding his bike nearby. She says her child saw the entire thing.

"It don't make no sense. My son is two-years-old. He could have lost his life," Miller said. "My son might not even make it to see how life really is. He could have lost his life. And ya'll just riding around, just shooting people while my son is right here."

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts arrived at the scene. The department is promising a full investigation.

"We have brought additional resources here to make sure that we canvass the neighborhood for any witnesses and make sure that we gather all the facts of this case," Rodriguez said.

The case will be reviewed by the State's Attorney's Office.

The victim is in surgery and listed in critical but stable condition.

Officials say the officers were patrolling that area to provide more visibility in the high-crime neighborhood.
