Long Trip Home For Millions Of Thanksgiving Travelers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Returning home. Millions of holiday travelers end their Thanksgiving driving, riding and flying home.

Marcus Washington reports it was a long trip for millions of people.

More than 40 million people traveled by air, train and car this Thanksgiving weekend, causing a bit more traffic whichever method you used getting to your destination.

It's often called one of the busiest times to travel in the year.

"I've been in the car way too long," said Love Davis.

And for many drivers, the return home from their Thanksgiving weekend was a long one.

Love Davis says her trip to New York from Baltimore took less than three hours. For Derrick Reynolds, he says next year's trip might not be in the car.

"Hopefully I'll fly," said Reynolds.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says it's no surprise many drivers are hitting traffic.

"Three-million Americans are expected to travel over the Thanksgiving day holiday period. Here in Maryland, about 983,000 Marylanders. And both of those numbers are the highest that we've seen since 2007," said Ragina Cooper Averella, AAA spokesperson.

With gas prices the lowest they have been in years--averaging out at $2.81 a gallon--many drivers are taking advantage.

"It's better coming back. It was worse on Tuesday night. Much worse," said Nick Potcovaru.

While no drivers say they live the traffic, they say the wait is sometimes worth the benefits of the trip.

"It was. I saw a lot of cousins I haven't seen in years. It was worth it," said Davis.

This year, 90 percent of those who traveled did so by car.

Thanksgiving holiday travel this year is the highest it has been in seven years.
