Local Breast Cancer Survivor Honored By Medieval Times, Surprised By Knights
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Breast cancer survivor Mary Capano, who beat the disease and then spent her life helping others who are battling it, was surprised and honored by Medieval Times knights at her Johns Hopkins office Wednesday.
WJZ's Amy Yensi was there.
Mary was nominated by her daughter-in-law, Dara, who admires her not only for fighting breast cancer while raising three children, but also for going on to work at St. Agnes hospital as "Breast Cancer Navigator," helping women in similar situations through their journeys. She's now an Oncology Nurse Navigator at the Johns Hopkins Avon Breast Center.
Throughout the month of September, friends and family members wrote in to Medieval Times, sharing the story of the "Pink Hero" in their life. After looking through numerous submissions, four were chosen.
After being surprised by Medieval Times in her office Wednesday, a knight clad in a pink cloak read her this proclamation:
"Congratulations, m'lady Mary. You have nominated by a loved one, her lady Dara, as one of our surprise Medieval Times survivor winners. You were brave, stood strong, fought hard, and won. Your strength inspires all of us, m'lady, so please enjoy a night on us to celebrate your courage and your bravery."
In addition to the Medieval Times tickets, the knights presented her with flowers and a pink crown.
"I've always wanted to wear a crown," she said.
"We want to let them know that they are truly knights," said Rae Ann Cinquanto, a Medieval Times spokeswoman. "They're the heroes... We fight for fun, they fight for their life."
The American Cancer Society estimates more than 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year alone. For more information, visit cancer.org.
