Life Coach Says Emotional Intelligence Can Be Assessed Online

Amy Steindler is a certified emotional intelligence trainer certified by Multi Health Systems, a company that develops psychological services and assessments. She provides assessments and coaching to both individuals and corporate clients. She is also certified as a life coach by the Martha Beck Institute. Steindler graduated from the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in theater and speech.

What led you to the field of emotional intelligence and what led you to start EQ-Insights Coaching & Training?

"During my corporate career, I noticed many leaders lacked the ability to inspire people to do their best work. Giving helpful feedback was difficult for most of them. I then discovered the role of emotional intelligence in creating more effective corporate environments. I started EQ-Insights after several years of life coaching because many of my individual clients also had work issues; they were looking for more fulfilling work to use their innate skills and gifts. When I see clients light up talking about what they want to do, I know they're on the right track."

How does your educational background relate to your current role?

"While my degree itself is less relevant to my current role, most employers seem more interested in the expertise I've gathered over the years. Candidly, the certifications I've earned have much more relevance to my work on a day-to-day basis because they provide the information experience does not."

How has your education helped to further your career and contributed to your success?

"Besides the technical knowledge I've gained, the ideas and concepts have taught me to 'work wiser.' In turn, I teach this to my clients. The 'process of education' serves us in ways beyond the facts and figures we learn. Education, including mentoring and coaching, helps us 'learn how to learn,' and that has important implications for the rest of our lives."

What is some advice you can offer others looking to go into your field of emotional intelligence assessment and coaching?

"You have to 'live it to give it.' You can't coach others in emotional intelligence until you've done your own work. It is sometimes difficult but always gratifying to achieve."
