Larry Hogan "Confident" Heading Into Election Day
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- With the race getting tight, Republican Larry Hogan knows every vote counts.
Meghan McCorkell was with Hogan in these final hours.
Larry Hogan says he is feeling optimistic going into Election Day, saying he believes the polls are tilting in his favor. He's trying to pull off a major upset and, with just hours before voters head to the polls, Larry Hogan is closing the gap.
"They're talking about this may be the biggest upset in the country but we're not taking this for granted. We're running like we're still 20 points behind," Hogan said.
Hogan and his running mate, Boyd Rutherford, spent Election eve pushing for votes in Baltimore City, Prince George's and Howard counties---all areas where the Democrat base is powerful. But they say Marylanders want a change.
"You're not going to get changes by voting for the same people over and over again," Rutherford said.
Hogan's camp says that their polls show them leading in 20 of Maryland's 23 counties, including Democratic strongholds. The non-partisan Cook Political Report has now moved the race into the toss-up category.
"There have been two polls in the past week. One shows us up by three points; the other shows us up by five points," Hogan said.
In a state where registered Democrats far outnumber registered Republicans, Hogan is focusing on getting voters to cross party lines, a move he hopes will be enough to put him on top Tuesday night.
As for the First Lady's visit to campaign for his competitor, Larry Hogan calls it a sign of desperation for the Democrats.
