Kubek, Sellers help No. 20 Maryland women turn back Syracuse 83-81

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Allie Kubek scored 23 points off the bench, Shyanne Sellers added 19 and No. 20 Maryland held on for an 83-81 win over Syracuse on Sunday.

Alaina Rice hit a 3-pointer for the Orange to make it a two-point game with 23 seconds to go then Kyra Wood forced a turnover with 10 seconds remaining. But Syracuse couldn't get a look at the basket and Bri McDaniel knocked it away as time expired.

McDaniel had 12 points, five assists and three steals off the bench for the Terrapins (2-2), who lost their previous two games to South Carolina and UConn. Lavendar Briggs had 10 points. Sellers and Kubek both had eight rebounds and Sellers had five steals.

Georgia Woolley scored 21 points with eight rebounds for the Orange (3-1). Dyaisha Fair had 14 points, five assists and three steals and Rice had 13 points.

There were seven ties and 12 lead changes in the first half that ended with Syracuse, led by Woolley's 11 points, on top 38-35.

The Terrapins shot 32%, due to a 4-for-20 second quarter and the Orange had runs of nine and seven points.

The back-and-forth continued in the third quarter with the Orange taking a 62-61 lead into the fourth.

Early in the final quarter McDaniel had four points in an 8-0 that put the Terrapins up for good, 71-64 with 6:15 to play. There were 12 ties and 21 lead changes for the game and neither team led by more than eight.

The Terrapins play No. 24 Washington State in Cancun, Mexico, on Thursday. Syracuse plays Northern Iowa in Las Vegas on Friday.
