Key Bridge demolition meeting scheduled for Thursday evening. Neighboring communities welcomed.
BALTIMORE - Crews are planning to demolish the final pieces of the Key Bridge in preparation for a new span. The public will have a chance to ask questions about the process at a community meeting on Thursday.
This comes more than four months after a cargo ship struck the bridge, causing it to collapse and killing 6 construction workers. Over 50,000 tons of Key Bridge wreckage have already been removed from the Patapsco River.
Maryland Transportation Authority requested a Tidal Wetlands License and Water Quality Certification which allows crews to demolish the remaining structure. The bridge ramps that are still standing will be removed, as they cannot be reused for the new structure.
Mechanical demolition and blasting will also be used to remove 16 in-water piers.
The remaining pieces will be moved out of the Patapsco River by barge.
MDTA said they will work with the selected bridge design team to chart a path for removing the remaining structures, in partnership with neighboring communities.
Community members are encouraged to attend public meeting
A public meeting to discuss the bridge project begins at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and will be held at the North Point Branch Public Library in Dundalk.
Attendees will have a chance to ask questions and give input about the process.
Demolition of the remaining Key Bridge structure is scheduled to start this summer or fall and is expected to take 10 months to complete. The design for a replacement bridge is still in the works.
The goal is to open the new bridge across the Patapsco River by mid-October of 2028.
