Katie Ledecky Throws Out First Pitch As Nats Host Orioles
WASHINGTON (WJZ)-- It's the summer time's battle of the Beltway and one of the most popular Maryland Olympians was on the mound to bring the teams together--even if it was just for a moment.
Katie Ledecky had an important job: throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Orioles-Nats game.
As one of the greatest athletes in the world, Ledecky did what she knew best and got some lessons in before she took to the mound.
"I practiced a little bit yesterday and I have some friends in our neighborhood that always warm me up, so I am ready," she said.
And Ledecky is no stranger to this type of high profile responsibility. This is the third time she's thrown out the first pitch at Nationals Park!
The Beltway rivalry was put on hold for a few minutes as fans on both sides were in awe of Ledecky's accomplishments.
"I'm also from Maryland, so I am proud of Katie Ledecky and I am proud of all the Maryland athletes," said Jake Maddox.
Fresh off her Rio Olympics high, Ledecky has another major move coming up to California as she starts her freshman year at college.
"I think it will be a pretty good transition, I mean everybody at Stanford is going to support me and I am going to be on a team with two other Olympians," said Ledecky.
Ledecky starts at Stanford in the fall and at just 19, many can't wait to see what else she'll accomplish in the pool.
