John Marking Jr. Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison For Deadly Towson Hit-And-Run On New Year's Eve 2019
TOWSON, MD. (WJZ) — A man has been sentenced to four years in prison and five years probation in the deadly hit-and-run in Towson back on New Year's Eve two years ago.
John Marking, Jr., 35, was arrested in February 2020 and charged in connection with the crash.
Tom Gluick was crossing Dulaney Valley Road near the Towson Town Center when an SUV, driven by Marking, hit him and left the scene.
Gluick, a former Johns Hopkins University professor, died from his injuries two weeks later.
His family said they do not feel justice was served.
"I feel robbed. We've waited for 388 days and I know there's no justice because Tom will never be back," Shelia Garrity, Gluick's widow, said.
"The person that took his life hit him at full speed with his truck and left him to die, and never turned himself in," she added.
Baltimore County Police were able to track down Marking. He eventually pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run and criminally negligent manslaughter.
Garrity was in the courtroom for the sentencing. She said it was the first time she saw the person responsible for killing the man she loved.
"I worried about this day," Garrity said. "I saw him, I saw his wife, I feel for them. Their lives are ruined as well, but they're still alive."
She said she's hoping this can provide some closure, and that others might learn a lesson from Gluick's death.
"If all of us think before we get behind the wheel, not only if we're taking a drink, but there's your cell phone, just leave it there. No distracted driving," Garrity said.
