Howard County Police investigate homicide and related pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle
BALTIMORE - Howard County Police believe a man killed a woman in his home and was then struck and killed by a car in Laurel Sunday evening.
Officers responded around 7p.m. to the 11200 block of Chaucers Ridge Court where a woman was pronounced dead. Minutes later, a man died after he was struck by a vehicle on Route 29 in the area of Old Columbia Road.
The driver was uninjured and remained at the scene.
Police have confirmed the suspect and victim were boyfriend and girlfriend, both were in their 20's.
The two were having an argument before the victim was killed, according to Sherry Llwellyn, director of public affairs for Howard County Police.
Members of Howard County Police's Emergency Services Unit and a Maryland State Police K-9 unit returned to Chaucers Ridge Court Monday.
Seeing police officers around the neighborhood had been an unusual sight for neighbors. One neighbor who spoke with WJZ on the condition of anonymity said he wasn't home Sunday night when police initially were there.
"A neighbor texted me and said, 'Hey, there's a lot of cop cars, what's going on?' I said, 'I don't know, I'm not in the neighborhood,'" he said.
Investigators believe the suspect took off from the home where the woman was killed and ran onto Route 29 where he was struck by a vehicle.
Llwellyn said there's evidence the suspect got in the road to kill himself.
The investigation has shaken officers.
"This is not just tragic, it's really unusual. Those two things happening back-to-back during one incident, it's very sad. It's sad for everyone involved," Llwellyn said. "It's sad for the people who were present int he home. It's sad for all the family members."
It's also shaken neighbors on Chaucers Ridge Court, who are still grappling with what happened on their street.
"It's sad and it's shocking," one neighbor told WJZ.
The driver involved will likely face no charges, according to Llwellyn.
