Hogan Says Howard County Sheriff Should Resign

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Gov. Larry Hogan says he believes Howard County Sheriff James Fitzgerald should resign.

The Republican governor said Tuesday he was "very disturbed" by comments noted in a yearlong investigation into Fitzgerald by the Howard County Office of Human Rights. It substantiated alleged racist and sexist comments made by the sheriff.

Hogan says he shares the views of many other officials that Fitzgerald should resign.

Hogan can't force the sheriff's removal, but he says the Maryland House of Delegates could push for impeachment, if necessary. Hogan says he would like to see Fitzgerald resign before that happens.

Howard County lawmakers have asked the attorney general's office for guidance on the full range of potential options, including impeachment.
