Historic Maryland Theater Wants More Funding

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A historic theater in western Maryland wants another $50,000 for a seat-replacement project.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners previously agreed to conditionally award $200,000 in hotel tax funding to The Maryland Theatre project in Hagerstown.

The Hagerstown City Council also has been supportive of matching up to $100,000 for the seats if the theater can raise that much through private donations.

But The Herald-Mail reports that the $500,000 project still has a funding gap.

Jessica Green, Maryland Theatre executive director, told the city council Tuesday that a little more than $70,000 has been raised and that she likely won't hear about three other grant applications until the end of the year.

Council members expressed doubt about giving the theater $50,000 without knowing the status of the grants.
