Indoor Market, Outdoor Cafes Coming To Inner Harbor

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's one of Baltimore's iconic spots -- know as a jewel to tourists.

But soon, Harborplace will get a makeover.

The city has big plans to remodel the pavilions downtown.

WJZ's Rick Ritter has a sneak peek at what it could look like.

When you hear Baltimore, it's hard not to think of the Inner Harbor.

For tourists, Harborplace is a jewel. For locals like Dana Gullard, not so much.

"To be honest I only come here to run, not really to shop or hang out," Gullard, a Mount Vernon resident, said.

It's a vibe the city is desperate to change.

"Right now I think it's more of a tourist hub and I think they can definitely do more to get more locals," Gullard said.

New renderings obtained by WJZ show a glimpse of plans to remodel the 30-year-old pavilions with a new structure, shops and dining.

"All of these new amenities are adjusting to the growth of interest to the harbor and recognition of importance of the harbor," said Laurie Schwartz, president of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore.

Pratt Street Pavillion is the first expected to be upgraded with an indoor market and outdoor cafes.

"I think people really like that whole locally made vibe rather than chain restaurants," Gullard added.

Upgrades aimed at drawing more locals like Gullard.

"I think it definitely needs it and the more they do the more people will come," she added.

It's a crucial part of Baltimore's success.

"The Inner Harbor is Baltimore's icon. It's where Baltimore meets the world. It's where we come together," Schwartz said.

Following the Pratt Street Pavillion upgrade, Light Street will be upgraded over the next year or two.

Some parts of the project could start as early as spring.
