Harbor Seal Spotted On Ocean City Beach

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Ocean City had a special visitor recently, when a harbor seal beached himself.

The Animal Control Unit was called out to make sure the public didn't disturb the seal, which stopped to rest on the beach.

Cynthia Herrick, who took photos of the seal, spoke with an officer, and she said 30 known seals had come onto the Ocean City beach last year.

The officer added that the seals on the beach are usually juveniles that are going out on their own for the first time, and they head to the beach for some much needed rest.

Police remind everyone to contact authorities if you spot a seal on the beach, and you must stay at least 150 feet away from seals at all times.

This is because a seal that hasn't been able to rest enough can drown if it returns to the sea too soon.

The National Aquarium also has a partnership with police, and will examine the seal if it looks to be in trouble, or if it stays on the beach for three days.
