Go Tigers! Towson Coach Gets Contract Extension, Star Player To Enter NFL Draft

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ/AP/CBS Sports)—It's been an amazing season for the Towson University football team, which came up one victory short of a national championship last Saturday.

"We lost the day, but we won the year," fifth-year coach Rob Ambrose said. "It goes back farther than three years ago. It was blowout losses, and then it was three-point losses and four-point losses to nationally ranked teams. We've been building this since Day 1 and the construction project is not over. We're not there yet, but we're certainly getting there."

They certainly are.

On Wednesday, Coach Ambrose got a contract extension for seven more years.

Ambrose has been at Towson for five seasons, twice taking the Tigers to the playoffs.

Junior Terrance West proved to be a true star last season.

In the FCS Championship game, West ran 3 yards on the final play of the first quarter for Towson's only touchdown, his 41st TD rushing and 42nd overall this season. He finished with 22 carries for 99 yards, pushing his season total to 2,509 — the most ever by an FCS player.

West, a runner-up for FCS player of the year, told CBS Sports that he will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft, possibly as high as the second or third round.

The Baltimore native was a big-school recruit but ended up going to prep school, had difficulty qualifying due to his SAT score, and ended up at Towson.

West, and Towson corner Jordan Love -- a transfer from Georgia expected to go in the fifth round -- are signing with agent Marc Lillibridge.
