Gas Prices Going Down As The Summer Rolls On

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--- It may not seem like it, but there is a little less pain at the pump this week.

Alex DeMetrick reports, gas prices are down and may be headed lower.

It adds up fast, but gas prices aren't as high as they were a few weeks ago.

"Fortunately, motorists are finally beginning to see some relief at the pump. Since the Fourth of July holiday we have seen a steady decline in gas prices," said Regina Cooper-Averella, AAA Mid-Atlantic.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, gas is four cents a gallon cheaper this week than last, averaging $3.59 a gallon for regular in Maryland.

It's even less at the Oceanic station in Lutherville.

"When you look back at the last seven years, regular unleaded was $1.81. Look at it today $3.55, and this is one of the cheapest places in town," said motorist, Sam Llanio.

Prices spiked over worry half a world away. The civil war that erupted in Iraq at the start of summer pushed crude oil prices higher. And while it's nowhere near being resolved, the fact Baghdad has not fallen helped ease industry fears.

"We have seen the situation in Iraq begin to stabilize a bit. That certainly was a factor playing with crude oil prices," Cooper-Averella said.

And it has played a factor with cheaper prices today.

"Well, a teeny bit. Maybe a schosh. That's all,"  said Mary Miller, motorist."Not enough. Oh Lord, no."

But AAA Mid-Atlantic says drivers could be headed to lower prices as summer goes on, provided a new crisis or hurricane don't work their way to the pump.
