Ft. McHenry Kicks Off Summer Season

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--The birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner will be a busy place this weekend. The summer season kicks off in a big way at Fort McHenry on Sunday.

Ron Matz reports it's all about fort, flag and freedom.

The home of the Star Spangled Banner will be the place to be on Sunday--Fort McHenry starts the summer.

"Sunday is the first military tattoo of the season. The tattoo is an old drum and bugle call, it's really the oldest tradition we have here it pre-dates the battle of Baltimore," said Ranger Vince Vaise, Chief of Interpretation at Fort McHenry.

Sunrise over the Fort is spectacular, you can see Mr. Boh and the Key Bridge and  feel what happened here in 1814.

The Fort's Fife and Drum Corps will be here too!

"For the Navy tattoo we're going to march into the Fort. We'll be playing Yankee Doodle tunes, we're going to bring it. The people will feel the thunder of the drums and it will bring it all alive," said Tim Ertel, Dir. Fort McHenry Fife and Drum.

"This is not like the boring history stuff in the history books. This is the real deal. This is living history. It really helps people understand the present as much as the past," Vaise said.

And Sunday's Flag Day so there's a special pause for the pledge ceremony here beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Sunday's ceremonies at Fort McHenry will feature the U.S. Navy Band, Drill Team and Color Guard.

It all starts at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
