From Scary To Sultry, Halloween Spirit Brings In Billions

BALTIMORE (WJZ)— Here's a mind-boggling number: Americans will spend $74 billion on Halloween.

Ron Matz reports that Baltimoreans are getting in the spirit and so are their pets.

At Paw Point, it's a pooch parade for Halloween.

Kids can't get enough of Olaf. Costumes from the movie "Frozen" are red hot.

"I'm here to pick up a few things. I'm getting my nephew something. My son wants to be Olaf from 'Frozen,' and I'm looking for a superhero costume," said Troy White, of Woodlawn.

"For kids, the most popular costume is definitely 'Frozen.' We've re-ordered it three times and still have good stock. We just got more Olaf costumes, but they're selling out fast," said Harriet Berlin, Artistic Costumes.

The lively leopard and the sorceress, and it seems each year pirates get more popular.

"Pirates are a staple now. People have pirate parties all year from Key West to Baltimore. It's an easy costume," Berlin said.

We found Batman and Darth Vader too.

"People can let their hair down," Berlin said. "You can be whatever you want to be. You can think outside the box and be crazy. People need that. They need that big day to party."

From scary to sexy, Baltimoreans are spending on Halloween.

"We're having a party, children with fun and games from 5 til 7 and then adult fun and games after that," said Louis Black, of Freeland. "Just on costumes, we probably spend close to$200. That doesn't include the party stuff, but it's fun. It's my second favorite holiday next to Christmas."

The National Retail Federation says Americans will spend $350 million this year just on Halloween costumes—for their pets!
