Friends, family honor 20-year-old Baltimore mass shooting victim

BALTIMORE - Kylis Fagbemi, just 20 years old, was shot and killed on July 2 while attending a block party in the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood in South Baltimore.

Fagbemi was one of two killed in the mass shooting, which also injured 28 others between the ages of 13 and 32.

On Tuesday, Fagbemi's family and friends gathered for a vigil in a Baltimore neighborhood where they prayed and shared messages of hope.

Police said the shooting happened after midnight on July 2 on Gretna Court. Aaliyah Gonzalez, 18, was also killed.

Fagbemi's parents told WJZ they just wanted friends and family to come together to celebrate his life.

His cousin, May, said his death is still hard to process.

"I couldn't believe it, like it just shook me like I can't believe it I didn't know what to say," his cousin said. "I cried."

Fagbemi's family said he was funny, intelligent and had a bright future ahead of him.

His mother struggled to find the words to express her pain.

"He done brightened your day in one way or another," she said. "There's so much on my heart that I want to say, and I really can't get it out."

Fagbemi's cousin said he was a smart guy who was loving and very loyal.

"He was a good cousin for real," she said. "He was always there for me when I did need him, like no matter what."

At the vigil, friends shared memories of Fagbemi.

His girlfriend, Ashley Garner, said he was funny and was a great boyfriend.

"He was very kind and genuine," Garner said. "He would put people before he put himself first. He will always be in my heart."

Last week, a 17-year-old who was shown in a video with a gun was arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting.
