82-year-old Pleads Guilty To Felony Theft
ELKTON, Md. (WJZ) -- An 82-year-old former treasurer of an municipal association pleaded guilty to felony theft in a Cecil County circuit court Wednesday.
State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt said Mabel R. Mumford-Pautz, a former treasurer with the Eastern Shore Association of Municipalities and former Chestertown town councilwoman, wrote fraudulent checks from the ESAM bank to herself.
According to court records, Mumford-Pautz wrote 84 unauthorized checks and then made deposits into her own personal bank account, using the money for personal purposes.
Between September 2008 and February 2014, she stole a total of $44,900 from ESAM, court records show.
The Honorable Keith A. Baynes sentenced Mumford-Pautz to 5 years, but suspended that sentence for three years of probation.
She was ordered to repay the full amount stolen as restitution.
"Ms. Mumford- Pautz held a position of trust and violated that trust. When a treasurer betrays the association they serve by stealing its funds they must be held accountable," Davitt said.
