Former Gov. Marvin Mandel Funeral Service To Be Held

PIKESVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Former Gov. Marvin Mandel's funeral service is being held near Baltimore.

The service is scheduled for Thursday morning at Sol Levinson & Bros. Funeral Home in Pikesville. After the services, the interment will be at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.

The funeral is open to the public.

Mandel died Sunday. He was 95.

The Democrat became governor in January 1969, when Spiro Agnew became vice president. Mandel was elected in 1970 and again in 1974 by wide margins.

He has been widely acknowledged as an effective governor who restructured state government and pushed big school construction and mass transit initiatives. He also made national headlines in a political corruption scandal that sent him to federal prison in a legal case that was later overturned.
