Former D.C. Candidate Charged In Funding Scheme
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A former D.C. Council candidate has been charged with lying about how much money his campaign received from a businessman who also admitted running a "shadow campaign" for Mayor Vincent Gray.
Jeff Smith was charged Monday with making a false statement to the District of Columbia's campaign finance office.
Smith ran unsuccessfully against D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham in a 2010 Democratic primary.
Federal prosecutors say Smith misrepresented and concealed the amount of money he received from businessman Jeffrey Thompson. Court documents don't indicate how much money he got from Thompson, who has admitted to funneling $668,000 in illicit funds into Gray's campaign that same year.
Another former council candidate, Kelvin Robinson, pleaded guilty this month to lying about money he received from Thompson.
