Fire Officials: 2 Escape Md. Townhouse Blaze

KETTERING, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County fire officials say working smoke detectors helped two people escape a two-alarm fire that gutted a townhouse in Kettering.

Fire crews were called to the home on Kettering Place around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday and found fire throughout all three levels of the home and burning through the roof. There was some damage to the roof of a neighboring home.

Fire Chief Marc Bashoor says two residents asleep at the time of the fire were able to escape the flames thanks to the smoke alarm.

Bashoor says the fire began in the basement of the home, but the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
