Final Inmates Transferred As Baltimore Prison Closes
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan announced Tuesday that the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services will complete the final transfer of inmates and detainees from the Baltimore City Detention Center (BCDC).
Beginning on July 30th, the department began transferring its 1,100 inmates and detainees to other detention centers in Maryland to allow them to remain in the proximity of area courts.
The detention center, notorious for being run by its inmates, will be permanently closed by 5 p.m. today.
"For years, corruption, criminal activity, and deplorable conditions have plagued this facility, but that ends today," Governor Hogan said. "The final closure of this detention center removes a stain on the reputation of Maryland's correctional system."
Repairs to the detention center in the past five years alone have cost more than $10 million and several housing areas have been closed due to significant structural issues and plumbing problems that have rendered 185 beds unusable.
The detention center's 772 employees will be transferred to other nearby facilities in Maryland or other parts of the Baltimore City pretrial complex that aren't affected by its closing.
