Driver Identified In Fatal Conowingo Dam Crash
CONOWINGO, Md. (WJZ) -- The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed after crashing on the Conowingo Dam early Tuesday.
Police have identified the man as 53-year-old Luis E. Garcia of Ridgewood, NY.
The tractor-trailer went over the barrier on Route 1 on the south side of the dam around 1:30 a.m. Although the truck dropped eight feet, it did not go into the water.
"The preliminary investigation shows that this tractor-trailer, as it was coming southbound, failed to negotiate this right bend in the curve, traveling over the jersey wall, and tumbling over about eight feet down," Brenda Carl, of the Maryland State Police, said.
Garcia was declared dead at the scene. The road was shut down in both directions overnight.
Although the road reopened in time for morning rush hour, it was shut down again Tuesday as crews repair damaged concrete on the dam.
"We had to get in there with two cranes and remove [the tractor-trailer]," an official said.
Maryland State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
