Ex-Corrections Officer Sentenced In Contraband Plot

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A former corrections officer has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for accepting money to smuggle contraband into a D.C. jail.

Thirty-four-year-old Lenard Fleming of District Heights, Maryland, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Washington.

According to government evidence, Fleming had worked for the Corrections Corporation of America as a corrections officer at the Correctional Treatment Facility. CCA has a contract to provide services to the D.C. jail.

Prosecutors say while working for the company, Fleming met with an undercover FBI agent and agreed to smuggle a cellphone and cigarettes to an inmate in exchange for $750.
