Driver Arrested After Police Pursuit; Officer Goes To Hospital After Being Hit On Arm

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- A driver has been arrested after leading officers on a pursuit and striking an officer with a vehicle.

Police say it happened around 11:45 a.m. in the area of Bestgate Rd. and Admiral Dr. in Annapolis.

Officers from the Annapolis Police Department witnessed a narcotics transaction. They requested assistance from the Anne Arundel County Police Department since the incident occurred outside of their jurisdiction.

An officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but police say Willie Rhodes, 24, failed to stop. Officers did not pursue the vehicle at this time, but they witnessed the vehicle going toward the Annapolis Mall.

An Anne Arundel County officer, who was on foot in the mall parking lot, tried to get Rhodes to pull over. Police say he struck the officer with the vehicle on his arm.

At this time, other officers arrived and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop for officers and officers pursued it in the Annapolis area.

Police say Rhodes struck at least two cars in the area of Chinquapin Round Rd. He then turned into the Newtowne 20 community where he bailed out of the vehicle.

After a brief foot pursuit, Rhodes was taken into custody. Officers say they located 13 baggies of heroin that were discarded during the pursuit.

Rhodes faces numerous charges, including attempted murder and first- and second-degree assault.

No one was seriously hurt. The officer who was struck went to the hospital with minor injuries to his arm.
