Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Wife Of Late Rep. Elijah Cummings, Resigns As State Dem Chair
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings has resigned as the chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, party officials said Monday night.
The announcement comes amid speculation she's considering running for her late husband Rep. Elijah Cummings' congressional seat. Last month, she told the Washington Post she was "thinking carefully" about whether to run.
Cummings died October 17 at age 68.
Baltimore City State Sen. Cory McCray will serve as the interim party chair until an election is held to find a permanent replacement. Party bylaws say that must happen within the next 60 days, officials said.

Rockeymoore Cummings is expected to make a "very special announcement" at her home Tuesday morning.
As of Monday, three Republicans and eight Democrats have filed paperwork indicating their plans to run for the seat.
A number of other candidates have not officially filed with the state but have declared their candidacies, including Republican activist Kimberly Klacik, former Democratic Rep. Kwiesi Mfume and Maryland Del. Talmadge Branch.
