Doctor With Rape Conviction Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit

TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- A doctor who got a Maryland medical license despite his Florida rape conviction has settled a wrongful death lawsuit in Baltimore County.

Attorney Jay Miller said Friday the family of Grace Elliott reached the settlement with Dr. William Dando in a case stemming from Elliott's death from a prescription drug overdose in 2010. Miller says the terms are confidential.

Dando's 1987 rape conviction became widely known last year after he was charged with sexually assaulting a female patient in Allegany County. He permanently surrendered his Maryland medical license to resolve the Allegany County case.

The state Board of Physicians has acknowledged it failed to investigate Dando in granting him a license in 1996.

Gov. Larry Hogan signed a law in April requiring criminal background checks for medical license applicants.
