Disciplinary Case Continues For Baltimore Police Van Driver
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Digging into the police rule books to determine who failed Freddie Gray.
Officers took the stand Tuesday during the administrative trial of one of their own.
Baltimore police officer Caesar Goodson is facing firing for his role in Freddie Gray's arrest and subsequent death.
He drove the van where Gray suffered deadly neck injuries.
Over and over again in the last two days, attorneys have gone over the timeline of Gray's arrest, but on Tuesday afternoon, there was testimony from two officers who were at the scene.
Three officers who were together in west Baltimore on the day of Gray's arrest back in April 2015 were back together again in a University of Baltimore hearing room.
Two called as witnesses. One on trial.
Officer Goodson has been cleared of criminal charges, but now faces firing for his role in Gray's arrest.
He's accused of violating police policy and procedure while driving the van in which Gray suffered deadly neck injuries.
His defense is instead putting the blame on a failure of the department to train officers.
Questioning a former Baltimore PD officer who witnessed Gray kneeling in the back of the police van, unsecured.
Just days after attorneys say a policy went into place for dealing with prisoners.
The defense claims it was buried in a stack of new rules and never relayed to officers.
The prosecution says it was officer Goodson's job to secure the prisoner.
Tuesday, both sides also questioned detective William Porter.
He once faced criminal charges for his role in Gray's arrest, which were later dismissed by the court.
Now, he's Testifying that Gray told him he wanted to go to the hospital before he was found limp in the back of the van later that day.
Officer Goodson is charged with violating dozens of police policies.
His trial is expected to go into next week.
Officer Goodson is the first of five to come up for administrative hearing.
Three of those officers face firing.
