Details Emerge In 12-Year-Old's Abduction
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- A man abducted and tried to sexually assault a 12-year-old girl in Annapolis. It happened over the weekend, but the girl was able to get away.
Monique Griego has more on how she got away and was able to identify her suspected attacker.
A 12-year-old girl walking through an Annapolis neighborhood suddenly found herself in the middle of a terrifying ordeal.
It was Saturday just after 3 when police say she was confronted by a strange man near Skippers Lane and South Cherry Grove.
"He came up and grabbed her and drug her into his vehicle," said Amy Miguez, Annapolis Police department.
The man then drove to a nearby street, parked, attempted to assault her and even exposed herself---but the girl fought back.
"She was able to jump out of the vehicle and that's when she alerted the police," Miguez said.
WJZ obtained the 911 call. James McGill is the 911 operator who got the call.
"I wanted to keep her as calm as possible. I wanted to make sure she was okay," he said.
"He had a hat and she grabbed me," the girl said in the call. "And he gave me money but I don't want it because I don't know who he is."
"It's okay now, you're on the phone with me. Like I said, now you're safe," McGill said.
Once officers arrived, the girl led them to where the suspect had parked. Surprisingly, the car was still there.
"It was parked; nobody was inside of it," Miguez said.
Investigators later identified the registered owner, 52-year-old Cordell Salisbury, as the girl's suspected attacker.
For McGill, the arrest brought closure.
"Especially because the nature of the call, I was checking all day to see if any developments. Then when I learned they'd taken the person into custody, it was good to know we closed the case," he said.
Salisbury is now facing a list of charges including kidnapping, false imprisonment and several sex offenses. He remains in jail.
Annapolis police say they hope this case encourages parents to talk to their kids about what to do if a stranger approaches them.
