Defense Files Motions In Virginia Student Murder Case

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Attorneys for a man charged with abducting and killing a University of Virginia student have filed several new motions in his capital murder case.

The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports that Jesse Matthew's attorneys are asking the judge to bar people in the courtroom from displaying any symbols supporting Hannah Graham, the 18-year-old woman Matthew is accused of killing last September. They also want the judge to allow Matthew to attend the trial unshackled and wearing his own clothes. He has worn restraints and a jail-issued jumpsuit at preliminary hearings.

Defense attorneys want to be notified if prosecutors plan to introduce any alleged or untried criminal conduct by Matthew.

Prosecutors have two weeks to respond to the motions. The next hearing is set for Aug. 20 in Albemarle Circuit Court.
