Daisy The Rhino, The Maryland Zoo's Oldest Mammal, Dies

BALTIMORE (AP) — The oldest mammal at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has died.

Zoo officials announced that its 48-year-old rhinoceros Daisy died Thursday. She was one of the six oldest Southern white rhinoceros in the United States.

Daisy was brought to the U.S. in 1973, and lived at Ohio's Kings Island Park before coming to Baltimore in 1992.

Carey Ricciardone, the zoo's mammal collection and conservation manager, says Daisy was being treated for age-related problems. Ricciardone says zoo officials decided to euthanize her after the rhino's condition progressed over recent weeks.

Zoo spokesman Mike McClure says Daisy was a huge personality and mainstay at the zoo for a long time.

The zoo's male white rhino, 21-year-old Stubby, will continue to live in the African Watering Hole with the zebra and ostrich.
