D.C. Drug Dealer Who Escaped Md. Jail Gets 20 Years

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Washington drug dealer who escaped from a western Maryland jail has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for the escape and other crimes.

A federal judge in Baltimore on Wednesday ordered 32-year-old Deandre Kelly to serve 8 years of the sentence consecutively to a 15-year sentence he is serving in Washington.

According to his plea agreement, Kelly pleaded guilty to drug offenses in Washington in 2009, but failed to show up for sentencing. He remained at large until Jan. 22, 2011, when he was arrested in Garrett County.

Prosecutors say Kelly was taken to the Garrett County Detention Center, and the next day, brandished a firearm, assaulted the officers in the jail and escaped.

Kelly was arrested on May 2, 2011, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
