D.C. Council Approves Bill To Outlaw Private Pot Clubs
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The D.C. Council has approved a bill that would ban marijuana smoking in private clubs.
The council voted unanimously in favor of the emergency legislation on Tuesday, just five days after recreational pot became legal in the District of Columbia.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and the council agreed that the bill was needed to clarify the new law. An initiative approved by voters last November allows people to possess up to 2 ounces of pot, grow it themselves and smoke in private homes. Smoking in public and buying or selling the drug remain illegal. The law took effect last week despite an attempt by Congress to block it.
The bill approved Tuesday closes a potential loophole that could have allowed private clubs to charge a membership fee and host pot parties.
