Czech Man Struck By SUV, Killed In Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Police say a man from the Czech Republic was struck and killed in Annapolis when he tried to cross Solomons Island Road without the right-of-way.

The collision occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday. Police say 26-year-old Petr Safar had a "don't walk" signal when he stepped into the roadway in dark and rainy conditions and was hit by a sport-utility vehicle.

Safar was dragged a short distance by the car. He died at the scene. Another pedestrian who was with him was not hurt.

Anne Arundel County police say neither speed nor alcohol appears to have been involved in the collision. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
