Five Firefighters Injured Battling Large House Fire In Anne Arundel County

LOTHIAN, Md. (WJZ) -- Five firefighters were injured battling a large two-alarm fire near Lothian in Anne Arundel County Thursday night.

Officials received multiple calls at 8:35 p.m. that a home in the 5500 block of Greenock Road was on fire.

When crews arrived, they found fire on the second floor and attic of the home.

"The nearest fire hydrant is about two and a half miles away at Southern High School," Anne Arundel County Fire Captain Russ Davies said. "We used a nearby pond about 3,000 feet away and used a system with tanker trucks and a water supply hose line to deliver water to the scene."

The home is in an area without fire hydrants, which forced firefighters to draw water from a pond 3000 feet away.

Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control in around two hours.

Five firefighters reportedly suffered minor or non-life threatening injuries battling the blaze. As of Friday morning, all but one had been released from a local hospital.

"We had a total of five firefighters who were injured," Davies said. "They varied from some minor injuries to some minor medical complaints. None of the medical complaints were life-threatening. As of this morning, four of the five firefighters have been discharged from the hospital. One was still being held for observation."

Two adults, who were not home at the time the fire broke out, were displaced.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
