COVID In Maryland: 867 New Cases, Hospitalizations Up Tuesday Morning
ANNAPOLIS (WJZ) — Maryland added 867 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday as hospitalizations and deaths increased, according to data from the State Department of Health.
The state has recorded 419,055 cases since the beginning of the pandemic and 8,192 deaths, up 15 from Monday.
Hospitalizations stand at 1,204, up 39 from the last day. Of those, there are 265 in ICU beds and 939 in acute care.
The state's positivity rate didn't move much, now at 5.8%.
Gov. Larry Hogan recently toured the mass vaccination site at M&T Bank Stadium.
"Getting more people vaccinated as quickly as we possibly can is our absolute best defense against these variants and it's the best way for us to win this war against this deadly virus," he said.
As of Tuesday morning, 1,149,976 Marylanders are fully vaccinated. They have administered 3,041,772 total doses, with 1,891,796 first doses and 1,051,502 second doses administered so far. Of those, 21,226 first doses and 21,386 second doses were given out in the last day.
They also continue to administer the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine, with 98,474 total given out so far. In the last day, they administered 5,333 doses.
As of Tuesday, all Marylanders 16 and older are eligible for their shot.
"I do feel like a lot of young people have been waiting for that opportunity to go in and get it," 16-year-old Sasha Abdul Kariem told WJZ.
Reagan Williams said she is thrilled her daughter will soon get to spend more time with her friends.
"I'm a teacher, so I see every day the ramifications of kids not being vaccinated and how hard it is on their mental health," Williams said. "So this was the biggest breath of fresh air and relief that we could have expected."
The CDC announced Tuesday more than $54 million to expand Maryland's vaccine equity to reach those disproportionately affected by the virus.
