Clues Sought In Elkon Fire That Left 2 Dead

ELKTON, Md. (WJZ)--Investigators are digging through what's left of a home in Cecil County, searching for the source of a fire that claimed the lives of two people on Monday night.

Flowers are left in the driveway of an Elkton home to honor the two people who lost their lives.

"It's going to be time consuming, it's going to be a complex investigation," said Howard Ewing, senior deputy with Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Firefighters were called to Deaver Road around 9:30 p.m. and found the home nearly engulfed.

More than 50 firefighters worked through the night to knock back flames.

"They fought the fire until the early morning hours and we stayed on scene all night Monday night into Tuesday," Ewing said.

The closest neighbors to the home are more than a quarter mile away and those WJZ spoke to off camera say they didn't hear or see much of anything.

It wasn't until the next morning that crews found the bodies of two people inside. The medical examiner has not yet identified the victims nor ruled a cause of death.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
