North Baltimore fire kills two people, leaves neighborhood residents shaken

City firefighters investigate fire that killed two people in North Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- Firefighters investigated a fire that killed two people in North Baltimore on Saturday morning.

Fire crews responded to reports of a fire on the 4700 block of Old York Road around 7 a.m., according to a press statement.

Firefighters arrived at the fire site and saw heavy flames and smoke coming from a two-story brick home.

As they began trying to extinguish the flames, one person managed to escape from the fire building.

When firefighters entered the residence to attack the fire from inside the home and search for potential victims, they found two people who were unconscious and non-responsive, fire officials said.

"That's why I was on my knees in there praying, hoping they're alright," neighbor Danny Gerringer said.

Those two people were placed in the care of paramedics and then taken to a local hospital to receive medical assistance.

Baltimore City fire officials told WJZ that both fire victims have succumbed to their injuries.

"They're just down to earth beautiful people," Gerringer said.

Due to the extent of the fire, an adjacent dwelling was damaged, too. No injuries have been reported from that residence.

Investigators are currently on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
