Children Thrown To Safety From Anne Arundel Fire

TRACYS LANDING, Md. (WJZ) -- An Anne Arundel County family loses everything after an early morning fire tears through their home.

Amy Yensi with more on how some escaped injury and even death.

The house is completely destroyed, but thankfully everyone made it out safely.

The quiet of dawn interrupted by the growing smoke and flames spreading through an Anne Arundel County home. Nine people were trapped inside.

"I just happened to look over and I'm like, 'Oh my god!' And the  flames were shooting out," said Bob Trumm, neighbor.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at 225 Hidden Valley Road. Bob Trumm and another neighbor were on their way to go hunting when they saw the fire and ran to the house, getting inside through an open garage door.

"We're banging and banging the door, we're  yelling at the top of our lungs. I'm trying to get 911 on the phone," said Trumm.

The neighbors helped evacuate six people who were on the first floor. But the smoke pushed them back.

That's when they ran outside to help rescue the other three trapped on the second floor.

A 58-year-old woman and her two grandchildren were gasping for air through an open window.

"Bill catches one, I grabbed it, goes over. The next little kid comes down, catch that," said Trumm.

"Then as the neighbors were attempting to locate a ladder to rescue her, she reached a point where she could no longer wait and she jumped," said Capt. Russ Davies, Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Charred shell and debris is all that's left of the home. Fire officials say the occupants are lucky their neighbors noticed the fire before it was too late.

"Had it not been for their actions, we probably would be talking about a fire that resulted in more serious injuries and quite likely fatalities," said Davies.

The grandmother was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with non-life threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt in the incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping the family.
