Charm City Cupcakes Starts From Scratch After Mt. Washington Flooding
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—It was the worst flooding we've seen in years. And weeks later, area businesses are still struggling to recover.
Jessica Kartalija reports from Mt. Washington, where a business owner is starting from scratch, hoping to cook up some new business.
She built her cupcake business from the ground up, and then it all washed away.
Recent flooding caused major damage to businesses in Mt. Washington.
"It's heart wrenching," said Sandra Long, Charm City Cupcakes owner. "If it wasn't nailed down, literally just washed out the door."
But Long is determined to keep her business cooking.
"As a business owner you just don't expect to ever get that call, where not only can you not operate, but truthfully, you are out of business," Long said.
Floodwater seeped through windows and doors, leaving pile of mud several inches thick, inside.
"It's hard to see your cupcakes like this. They are still beautiful, but we have to sell them out of a box until we can get another case," Long said.
And that could take weeks.
All this weekend, Long and her staff will be doing minis for Mt. Washington. All the proceeds from the sale of the mini cupcakes will go toward rebuilding the shop.
"Charm City Cupcakes is the love of my life. To lose that and be faced with the reality that you're going to shut your doors it is heart wrenching," Long said.
Support from the community is the icing on the cupcake.
"They know I baked them this morning, so they're OK," Long said.
This weekend, Charm City Cupcakes is open from 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Mt. Washington location.
The cupcake shop is in a historic guard house in Mt. Washington that dates back to the 1800s.
