New Insight Into City Kidnapping Turned Police Chase

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It was the police chase that may have saved one woman's life. Officials say quick thinking officers helped rescue a kidnapped woman from her abductors.

Now new documents obtained by WJZ offer new insight into how it all went down.

Meghan McCorkell has the revealing details.

That police chase stretched from South Baltimore to BWI and back. Now we are learning more about what sparked it all.

It was a police pursuit that ended in dramatic fashion. Now WJZ has learned it all started near 6th Street and Arsan Avenue in Brooklyn.

Witnesses say Robert and Kerry Bethea got out of their silver Chrysler and kidnapped a woman.

According to charging documents obtained by WJZ, the two men began to assault her with closed fists and feet. They said they were going to kill her and threw her in the back of the car.

Police first encountered the car about five miles away. They say the woman was intensely banging on the window trying to get help.

When they tried to stop the car, the driver took off. The officers followed.

"When two police officers see an abduction in progress and they witness it with their own eyes, we have to pursue," said Interim Chief Kevin Davis, Baltimore Police Department.

For nearly half an hour, police followed as the car weaved dangerously in and out of traffic.

Police say Kerry Bethea jumped from the moving car and was caught trying to ditch bags of cocaine.

Moments later, Robert Bethea crashed the car. Police caught him and saved the woman inside.

Police say she suffered a broken nose, lost a tooth, had hair pulled from her scalp and bruises across her body.

Her alleged abductors are now behind bars.

The two men face kidnapping and assault charges. They're both being held without bail.

Kerry Bethea is also facing drug charges.
